Kiln drying service to improve the quality of your lumber
If you plan to bring your wood projects into a home it is a very good idea to have your lumber kiln dried. Our Nyle L-200 is a low temperature dehumidification kiln. It will drive the moisture out of your lumber in a controlled environment to limit stress on the lumber. We bring the moisture of the wood in the kiln down to a moisture of between 6-8% and our serialization process insures no bugs will survive in your lumber.
Dry lumber improves stability and sterilization ensures all bug larvae are killed.
There is a reason why all major lumber outlets only sell kiln dry lumber. It’s better. It is more stable when it has been dried to 6-8 % moisture. All the wood that goes into the kiln will also go through a sterilization process after the wood is dry. This is where we bring the kiln up to approx, 150 degrees for 18 - 24 hrs. to kill any bug larvae. This ensures when you bring your wood into your home you will not be bringing any friends in with it.
Rates for kiln drying lumber
Our kiln measure approx. 19’ x 10’ it can hold around 2200 board feet of 4/4 lumber at it’s max.
The kiln is heated and automatically controlled by hydro and the Nyle PLC controller.
Here is a shot of the outside of your kiln before the control cabinet was installed. As well as the inside of the kiln before sheeting it.
Running the kiln is a bit of a juggling game trying to maximize the wood in the kiln and work with different lengths and thicknesses of wood.
Custom kiln Service:
Customer excepts the risk of the kiln drying process. Our kiln is a low temperature kiln so it is pretty safe. However some lumber has stress internally that during the drying process it is bound to move. Some customers expect all there lumber to be nice and flat coming out of the kiln. This will not be the case. Some wood dry’s better then other species but most all the wood moves our goal is to dry it with as little movement as possible. Then it will be up to the woodworker to work the wood flat. This is why we always mill our 4/4 lumber to 1 1/8” thick, this leaves more material for the planing and flattening process.
Our min kiln board foot requirement is 300 BF, we ask the customer to have the wood stickered and bundled in a stack of lumber that is 4 feet wide and of all common length of 8, 10, 12, 14 or 16’ it is important that the end of the pile is even with the other lumber down the entirety of the skid. If the customer can’t bring the wood in as a skid or if the skid is stacked improperly. We will be charging the customer $60.00/hr. to stack and sticker the wood.
Once the wood is in the kiln it will remain in until the moisture of the whole charge reaches an average of 6-8 %. We will make every effort to place your lumber in the kiln with wood of similar moisture and thickness. However some variations is inevitable.
After the drying process the wood will go through a sterilization process to kill any bug larvae that might be in the wood.
Once the kiln is finished the customer will be called and pick up will be requested the day the kiln is opened. If pickup can’t be made that day I will try to get the wood inside but there is no guarantee of this and the wood may be placed outside.
Payment will need to be made before the wood leaves the property of Cherished Tree Sawmill.
Kiln drying rate is $0.07 per board foot per day.
