American Black Walnut is recognizable by its distinct heartwood that ranges from light brown to a rich dark chocolate color. The sap wood is a pale yellow to white color. Black walnut is rated as a very durable rot resistant wood.
Black Walnut typically has a straight grain that is usually easy to work. However, figured grain such as curl and crotch can present more challenge when working this wood. Black Walnut glues and takes finishes well.
